BBC: Mayor mulls bicycle number plates

Number plates for bicycles are being considered by the mayor [of London] in a bid to improve cycling standards. Ken Livingstone believes bicycles and their owners should be registered so that law-breakers can be caught…

Peter King, chief executive of British Cycling, said only a "tiny minority of cyclists" were at fault of flouting road regulations.

Yeah, right.

I can't see how bike number plates could me made to work without compulsory insurance and licences for cyclists too, but that's probably a damn good idea.

I dare say Irish Mick would disagree. Last week, I learnt that he is no longer Irish Mick, in that he is now living in Manchester. He's got a new job with Sustrans, the sustainable transport (i.e. bike) charity as Co-ordinator of Rangers in the North of England—which is so Tolkienesque, I think I'm going to start calling him Strider.

  1. I totally agree with you on this one: It's far too easy for cyclists to cause accidents & then ride off into the sunset with no fear of prosecution. With the vastly increased volume of traffic on the roads, cyclists should stand up & be counted along with the rest of us road users & be of a standard to use the roads correctly.

My beef is with those white line jockeys (motorcyclists). I think they should all have to spend time on bicycles. That would stop them being so bloody cocky, weaving in & out of traffic & queue jumping.

And while I'm at it, why do truck drivers always choose to overtake each other on steep hills on dual carriageways at 50mph, causing long tailbacks of traffic waiting to overtake them?

    Gripe over, back to work!

  2. Rider would be better...And if you don't like the way we cyclists effortlessly nip through traffic whilst the petrolheads of this world sit and simmer, get off your fat arses and join us - you know it makes sense.
