BBC: Brown hails 'vote of confidence'

The prime minister has hailed Labour's Glenrothes by-election victory as a vote of confidence in the government's handling of the economic crisis.

I'm sorry, Prime Minister, but it only counts as a vote of confidence if you announce beforehand that you're taking it as such. If the voters don't know it's a vote of confidence, then it isn't a vote of confidence.

  1. It just goes to show that even when you thought it wasn't possible for a politician to get any slimier and self-serving.... A very specific area of Britain got to vote on a paliamentary election, so they had to choose one of the parties on offer and without the option of saying at the same time "we think you're shit, but we don't like the other party much either!". I'm surprised that Gordon Brown hasn't taken credit for Barack Obama yet. There was something that puzzled me in the BBC report. "Government sources said the party only realised that it would win once officials started sampling the actual ballot papers as they were being counted, at about 10.30pm." What does 'sampling' mean? If they were counting the votes then why would anyone else be messing aaround with them? I thought all of that was off limits. Until the count and result was announced how come the parties were being given feedback (other than the exit polls they already had).
