Occasionally amusing travel pieces.

Yoga for People Who Can't be Bothered to Do It

I only discovered Geoff Dyer's writing recently. I very much enjoyed his Working the Room and The Missing of the Somme, but Yoga for People Who Can't be Bothered to Do It didn't do much for me, I'm afraid to say. The individual ‘travel’ pieces were OK, but finishing the book didn't exactly leave me hungry for more.

Although I was amused by one or two passages—especially the one about the café with too many seats—I have to take issue with Maggie O'Farrell's description of the book (as quoted on the cover) as ‘screamingly funny’. Occasionally amusing would seem much closer to the mark.

The good news is, I bought my arty-farty directrix mate, Stense, Dyer's Zona: A Book About a Film About a Journey to a Room for Christmas. From what I've heard, it sounds pretty interesting. So I'll probably give it a go myself soon.
