Granta 118: Exit Strategies

by John Freeman (ed.).

Too much fiction, yet again.

Granta 118: Exit Strategies

For once, most of the pieces in this edition of Granta actually seem to fit the chosen theme, Exit Strategies, very well. Most of the pieces are about people trying to get out of particular situations.

There are a couple of excellent pieces of memoir, particularly Claire Messud's The Road to Damascus, about her trip to Beirut as her father lies dying in hospital, Aleksandar Hemon's piece about his family's dog and the Bosnian War, and veteran writer John Barth's short piece about no longer seeming to be able to write.

But, as is becoming infuriatingly more common in Granta these days, there is far too much fiction. Some of the fiction was all right, but, as usual, I ended up abandoning several unengaging short stories when I has only half-way through.

Come on, Granta, get your act together: more non-fiction, please!
