Granta 98: The Deep End

This is Ian Jack's final edition of Granta as editor. He finished on a high note. It is one of the best editions for quite some time.

I'm not quite sure why I enjoyed this edition so much. One factor must surely have been that there seemed to be less fiction than usual. But the quality of writing was remarkably high this time, and the choice of subject matter was varied yet strangely consistent. There was even a fabulous set of photographs by one of my favourite photographers, Martin Parr.

Let's hope the new editor of Granta does as good a job as Ian Jack.
