by John Lewis-Stempel
The private life of an English field.
Meadowland is an account of a year in the field's of John Lewis-Stempel's farm in Herefordshire. His family has been rooted in the area for centuries. It is clearly a place he loves very much.
Lewis-Stempel comes across as a traditional landed countryman, with a fascination and respect for wildlife, who is, nevertheless, not above bagging the odd pheasant for the pot.
I enjoyed this book, although I think it is more likely to appeal to readers of the Telegraph than the Guardian.
