Book review: ‘Hawkfall and Other Stories’ by George Mackay Brown

Hawkfall

This is a collection of short stories set in Orkney.

The first story, Hawkfall, stretches across several thousand years of pre-history and history in the islands. Other stories take their inspiration from the local Viking sagas. One tale deals with the fantastical, in the form of selkie. But most the stories are about ordinary people living in small, isolated communities.

It’s a collection that’s difficult to describe, but I enjoyed it very much.
