Look, I am officially giving up trying to describe Sebald's books. They are unlike anything you have ever read before. Unless you've read Sebald—in which case, you'll know what to expect.
Postscript, Nov 2016: I have since re-read Vertigo five times. Like all of Sebald’s books, it get better with every reading. They're still pretty indescribable, though. And just as wonderful as ever.
