Book Review: ‘The Book of Alchemy’ by Suleika Jaouad

‘The Book of Alchemy’ by Suleika Jaouad

I bought this book on the strength of an excellent YouTube interview. I liked Suleika Jaouad’s approach to life, and the things she had to say about the benefits of journaling.

Jaouad rose to fame through her New York Times column documenting her treatment for and recovery from cancer. This column went on to form the basis of her book *Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted.

The Book of Alchemy came about through an immensely popular newsletter Jaouad launched in 2020 during Covid19 lockdown. Each newsletter contained an essay and creative prompt written by various writers, artists and thinkers. This book collects one-hundred such essays and related prompts from a large number of contributors. I enjoyed the thoughtful essays very much indeed, although it’s unlikely I’ll take up many of the creative prompts.

If you’re interest in creativity in general, and journaling in particular, you’ll likely enjoy this book as much as I did.

Note: I will receive a small referral fee if you buy this book via one of the above links.
