Book review: ‘The Best of Me’ by David Sedaris

‘The Best of Me’ by David Sedaris

As its title implies, this is a ‘best of’ anthology of American humorist David Sedaris’s writing. It contains a small amount of fiction, which I didn’t enjoy, but mostly comprises short, humorous memoir pieces, many of them about his relationships with members of his family.

Sedaris is a talented writer with a knack for mixing comic and serious observations. Although the comic writing is usually gentle in humour, it is occasionally unexpectedly dark—and all the better for that. At times, the serious writing is also unexpectedly moving.

An entertaining read.
