For a species of former tree-dwellers, we certainly have our moments.
I think this is the best bats yet
Some bats in my garden last night:
Shot with my Canon DSLR attached to a bat-detector. (Crappy camerawork, I know, but the point of the exercise was to establish whether I could get it to work at all!)
…in a storm
From an advertisement on the back of the latest London Review of Books (my butler reads it):
P O R T
Port is a global quarterly men's magazine which merges style with thoughtful, intelligent content…Elegant and informed, Port magazine is an independent haven where the love of pleasure and the love of unbiased knowledge go hand in hand…
Looks as if Gruts might finally have some competition!
Bring it on, boys!
(They're sticking with the dead-tree business model. They don't stand a chance.)
Chopping up the lifeboats on the Titanic
Compare and contrast:
BBC: Global carbon emissions reach record, says IEA
Global carbon emissions reached a record level last year, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
BBC: Germany: Nuclear power plants to close by 2022
Germany's coalition government has announced a reversal of policy that will see all the country's nuclear power plants phased out by 2022.
Madness.

Guardian: Carte Blanche by Jeffery Deaver - review
Fans will approve of Jeffery Deaver's James Bond, who is both the daring spy of old and a product of the 21st century…
The new Bond novel is getting a lot of press coverage at the moment.
The problem is, every time I see the phrase Carte Blanche, I read it as Cate Blanchett:

Now there's an actress who can have any part she chooses.
Yet another dud
…Well that has got to be the WORST RAPTURE EVER!!
I am so disappointed. What a let down! And not for the first time:
Meanwhile, the Pope has been hearing voices from above again. But this time they're real.
Signing off
Jee-zuss! Is that the time already? It's the Rapture tomorrow.
What can I say, chaps? It was nice knowing you.
Take care of yourselves, and be nice to each other.
Now with improved comments
[Please Note: This announcement has been superseded by the major upgrade to Gruts on 01-Dec-2011.]
I've just tweaked the Gruts commenting system. Those little pictures (avatars) which appear on the recent comments page alongside people's comments now also appear alongside the comments underneath each Gruts item. And, better still, you can now set up or change your own avatar.
Next, I shall be invading Poland.
I call this photo…
A sight to warm the cockles of one's heart
I took the above photograph last Tuesday morning on my way into work. The shot is looking back towards Hebden Bridge.
Do you see that slight smudge on the horizon? Do you know what that is?
THAT'S THE LOCAL WIND POWERSTATION ON FIRE!!
(Before you say anything, I have an excellent alibi.)
Local Flickr photographer 'BL259' has a couple of much better shots: 1 | 2
Unfortunately, I don't think there will be any lasting damage.
